Greater Wellington Regional Council
Battle Hill Farm Forest Park
Battle Hill is on the old Pauatahanui-Paekakariki Hill Road and is the site
of the last significant confrontation between Maori and Government forces in the
Wellington area. A recently installed historical trail with large interpretation
panels highlights the key points in Te Rangihaeata's stand against government
troops in August 1846.
Information and brochures on the walk can be obtained on http://www.gw.govt.nz/section398.cfm
or at the Rangers office which is located at the homestead inside the main
gate. Start the walk at the sign overlooking the graveyard; the interpretation
panels will guide and inform you of the historical battle as you climb a
steep hill to the summit. On a fine day there is a wonderful view south towards
the Pauatahanui Inlet. Return can be via the bush reserve to the starting point.
Allow 1-2 hours to allow time to read the panels and enjoy the view of the
surrounding countryside.
