Charles Rooking Carter, born 1822 near Kendal. Westmorland.
Died and buried at Clareville Cemetery 22nd July 1896.
His wife and daughter are buried at Burbage. Derbyshire.

Ellen Dougherty.  1844-1917.  Became the First Registered Nurse in the World, trained at Wellington Hospital, Palmerston North Hospital first Matron. Buried at Clareville Cemetery.
Registration began 1901 in New Zealand. Ellen started training when 44 years old.

Stephen Carkeek, Born Wales 12 April 1815.  He was very prominent figure in the early colonisation of New Zealand. 1841 he established Customs in Nelson, 1849, in Wellington as Collector of Customs. He was an enthusiatic astronomer, died and is buried at Featherston. 1878.  The name Carkeek is actually from Cornwall.
