The
historic 'Fell' locomotive, H 199 Mont Cenis, has been displayed at
Featherston's Fell Museum since 1984. Built in 1875, it worked on the
Rimutaka Incline, New Zealand's steepest railway line, for 77 years from
1878 until 1955. Behind H 199 is 'Fell' brake-van F 210, built in 1898
and a veteran of the Incline for 57 years. Both H 199 and F 210 have been meticulously
restored by members of the Fell Locomotive Museum Inc. Photograph: Maurice

'Fell'
locomotive H 199 and brake-van F 210 are surrounded by photographs,
models and memorabilia from the Rimutaka Incline and Wellington-Masterton
railway. The Museum also has a theatrette in which historic films are shown of
the Incline, including the wide-screen, surround sound presentation 'Rimutaka
1949'. A pit under H 199 permits a clear view of the locomotive's grip
wheels and brake-blocks, and the Incline's centre rail. Friendly volunteers
are available to answer questions and the Museum sells a wide range of
souvenirs. Photograph: Bruce Hermann.
